Last Saturday, I finally checked something off my bucket list that had been sitting there for way too long: attending a Charlotte 49ers college football game at Jerry Richardson Stadium. I have lived in the Queen City for years and always heard friends rave about game day, but nothing prepared me for just how electric the whole experience would be. From the moment I woke up that morning, I could feel the buzz in the air, and honestly, the entire day exceeded every expectation I had.
We arrived at the tailgate lots around noon, a solid three hours before kickoff, and the smell of burgers and brisket hitting the grills immediately told me we were in the right place. What struck me most was how welcoming everyone was. Perfect strangers invited us to play cornhole, offered us drinks, and spent twenty minutes debating the team's offensive scheme like they were coordinators themselves. I have been to plenty of sporting events, but the community feeling at a Charlotte game felt genuinely different. It was less about spectacle and more about neighbors coming together to cheer for their city's team.
When we finally made our way into the stadium, I stopped for a second to take it all in. The green and gold everywhere, families filing in with kids clutching foam fingers, and the marching band warming up created this perfect pregame atmosphere. My seat was in the student section-adjacent area, which I would absolutely recommend if you want maximum energy. The chants, the coordination, the sheer volume when the team ran out of the tunnel gave me chills even though I had no personal stake in the game going in.
The football was better than I expected, too. There was a goal-line stand in the third quarter that had the entire stadium on its feet, and when the 49ers punched in a long touchdown early in the fourth, the place absolutely erupted. High-fiving people I had never met felt completely natural by that point. By the final whistle, my voice was hoarse and my face hurt from smiling, which is honestly the best sign of a great day.
On the drive home, I kept thinking about how underrated Charlotte college football is as an experience. Tickets are affordable, parking is manageable compared to bigger programs, and the whole day feels accessible in a way that professional sports often do not. If you live anywhere near Charlotte and have been on the fence about going to a game, take this as your sign. Grab some friends, fire up the grill, and get to the stadium early. I promise you will leave wondering why you waited as long as I did.
