Here is a trick that works a treat: grab a bowl of snacks — grapes, crackers, raisins, whatever your kitchen cupboard offers — and let the counting carnival begin. Ask your young mathematicians to colour in a picture of the bowl first, then group the real snacks into sets. Two crackers plus three crackers equals... well, five crackers that mysteriously vanish into someone's tummy before you can say "place value".
