getty fire los angeles

I'll never forget the morning of October 28, 2019. My phone buzzed at 2 a.m. with an emergency alert, and for a moment, half asleep, I didn't understand what I was reading. Then I looked out my window and saw it: an orange glow sitting on the ridgeline near the 405, right above the Getty Center. The Getty Fire had started, and it was moving fast through the dry brush of the Sepulveda Pass. Living in Los Angeles, you hear about wildfires every year, but nothing prepares you for the night one arrives in your own neighborhood.

Within hours, the air turned thick with smoke and ash. The Santa Ana winds, gusting up to 70 miles per hour that night, were doing exactly what we all feared they would do, pushing embers down the hillside toward Brentwood, Bel Air, and the Westside. Schools closed. Freeways backed up as tens of thousands of people scrambled to evacuate. I packed a bag I genuinely hoped I'd never have to grab, throwing in passports, photo albums, and my laptop, while checking evacuation zone maps on my phone every five minutes. The uncertainty is the part nobody talks about enough. You sit in the dark, watching the sky change color, refreshing updates, wondering if the wind will shift your way.

What struck me most was how the fire seemed almost surreal in its location. This wasn't a remote canyon in the mountains. This was the 405, one of the busiest freeways in the country, with the iconic Getty Center museum perched nearby. Flames were visible from Westwood, from Santa Monica, from places where people don't expect to see a wildfire burning. The museum itself survived largely unscathed, thanks to its fire-resistant design and cleared grounds, but surrounding neighborhoods weren't as lucky. The fire ultimately scorched more than 700 acres
