If you have ever spent more than four minutes with a five-year-old, you will know that their attention span is roughly the length of a goldfish's memory and their energy levels could power a small city. Fear not, exhausted parents and heroic teachers! We have rounded up a cracking collection of kindergarten activities that will keep the little darlings entertained, educated and just about too tired to cause chaos at bedtime. Grab a cuppa, hide the glitter (or don't, we are not your mum), and let's dive in.

Messy Masterpieces: Abstract Art That Would Make Picasso Proud

Colourful abstract painting created by children during a messy kindergarten art activity

Nothing says kindergarten quite like paint in places paint should never be. Set up a finger-painting station, hand the children paper, and watch in awe as they create swirling, splodgy masterpieces that look suspiciously like modern art. The trick is to embrace the chaos: stick the finished works on the fridge, call them "gallery exhibits" and charge relatives admission fees. Who knows, you might have the next big thing in abstract art sitting at your kitchen table, happily covered in blue paint from head to toe.

Imagination Stations: Turning the Living Room Into Another Universe

Vibrant abstract background used to inspire imaginative play and storytelling in a kindergarten classroom

Kindergarten children have imaginations so powerful they could probably invent a new colour if you asked them to. Use bold, colourful images as storytelling prompts: stick an abstract picture on the wall and ask the little ones what they can see. One child will spot a dragon, another will insist it is a dancing banana, and suddenly you have a forty-minute puppet show on your hands. Throw in some cardboard boxes, a few old bedsheets and a wooden spoon microphone, and you have built a rocket ship, a castle and a rock concert venue all before lunch.
