I have spent far too many evenings this season glued to Notre Dame highlights, and I keep coming back to the same question: what is the perfect NFL comp for Malachi Fields? The former Virginia standout has blossomed into one of the most intriguing wide receiver prospects in this draft class, and every time I watch him wall off a defender on a back-shoulder throw, one particular name springs to mind. Before I get to that comparison, let me walk you through why I find him so fascinating in the first place.

Why Malachi Fields Reminds Me of Football's Great Reliable Targets

What strikes me most about Fields is how unglamorous his greatness can be. He will not run a blistering forty time, and I have made peace with that. What he does instead is win with size, body control and a stunningly reliable pair of hands. Watching him high-point the ball along the sideline takes me back to my childhood, when I first fell in love with players who simply refused to drop anything. There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about a receiver whose greatest strength is dependability, and I believe NFL scouting departments secretly covet that trait more than they admit publicly.

My Player Comparison: A Big-Bodied WR Who Thrived in the Right System

When I picture Fields in an NFL uniform, I cannot shake the image of a young Michael Pittman
