There is something quietly compelling about marshals that has stayed with me ever since I first watched them work at a local charity run. While the runners got the cheers and the organisers took the applause, it was the marshals standing at cold junctions, directing crowds and checking routes, who genuinely kept the whole event alive. I have come to believe that marshals are among the most underrated figures in public life, and I want to share why they have earned my lasting respect.

What a Marshal Actually Does

When people hear the word marshal, they often picture the famous United States Marshals Service, those federal officers who track fugitives and protect the courts. That is one branch of the family, certainly, but the title covers far more ground. A marshal can be a ceremonial officer at a grand occasion, a safety steward at a motor race, a parade leader, or a courtroom official keeping proceedings dignified. What unites them all is responsibility. A marshal holds authority precisely so that everyone else can relax and enjoy themselves. I find that trade-off fascinating: one person absorbs the stress so that hundreds need not feel it. Whenever I have volunteered as a marshal myself, I have noticed how much quiet vigilance the role demands — you are constantly reading crowds, watching weather, and anticipating problems before they surface.

Why Marshals Deserve More Recognition

My admiration deepened the day a marshal redirected our entire walking group around a flooded path without a hint of panic. Nobody behind us ever knew there had been a problem, and that, I realised, is the whole point. Good marshalling is invisible until the moment it is indispensable. Think of motorsport, where marshals stationed around the circuit are often the first responders to a crash, arriving before ambulances with extinguishers in hand. Think of history, too — marshals have supervised elections, enforced court orders, and kept peace at vast public gatherings for centuries. They carry legal authority in many countries, yet most of them at local events are simply volunteers giving up their weekends. I have made a habit of thanking marshals whenever I pass them now, because a kind word costs nothing and they rarely receive one. If you ever attend a race, a festival, or a march, spare a thought for the person in the hi-vis vest standing in the rain. They are the reason the day runs smoothly, and in my view, that quiet dependability deserves far more honour than it usually gets.
