If you had told me at the start of the school year that I would actually come to enjoy maths, I probably would have laughed. Year 10 at Gymnasium is famous for being the point where mathematics stops being simple arithmetic and starts becoming a proper language of its own. Looking back now, I want to share the topics that defined my year, the ones that challenged me, and the surprising places where I found maths hiding in everyday life.

Quadratic Equations: My First Real Battle

The pq-formula and the midnight formula (as we affectionately call the quadratic formula in Germany) were the first proper hurdles of the year. I remember staring at equations like x² + px + q = 0 and feeling completely lost. But once I understood that solving quadratics is really just asking "where does this parabola cross the x-axis?", everything clicked. Graphing those curves by hand in my exercise book gave me a visual intuition that no amount of memorising formulas ever could.

Functions and Their Graphs: Seeing Relationships Everywhere

Linear functions were familiar territory, but Year 10 introduced us to quadratic and exponential functions in earnest. Suddenly I could describe how a ball flies through the air, how populations grow, or how interest compounds on my savings account. Learning to read a graph properly, to identify vertex points, zeros, and gradients, felt like being handed a pair of glasses. My teacher kept saying that functions are the grammar of mathematics, and by spring I finally understood what she meant.

Trigonometry and Pythagoras: Triangles Take Over

Sine, cosine, and tangent arrived mid-year and initially terrified me. Calculating heights of buildings and distances across rivers using nothing but angles felt almost magical. The Thales theorem and intercept theorems gave us tools to solve problems that seemed impossible on paper. My favourite moment of the whole year was measuring the school flagpole during a practical lesson using only a protractor and some clever trigonometry.

Probability and Statistics: Maths Meets Real Life

The final major topic was probability theory. Four-field tables, tree diagrams, and the classic urn problems taught me to think carefully about chance and risk. I now catch myself calculating odds whenever I play card games with friends, which they find both impressive and deeply annoying.

Finding Maths in Unexpected Places: Even Brand Logos

One thing Year 10 taught me is that mathematics is genuinely everywhere, even in places you would never suspect. Take corporate branding, for instance. When I started looking at famous logos with a mathematical eye, I noticed the symmetry, proportion, and geometric construction behind them. The Bunnings Warehouse logo, shown below, is a great example of
