I used to believe every polished image I scrolled past. The smiling employee back at their desk after illness, the inspirational poster about work-life balance pinned above a tidy workstation, the stock photographs of people who seemed to juggle hospital appointments and deadlines without a single hair out of place. For years, I measured my own messy reality against these picture perfect lies, and I always came up short. It took a health scare of my own to realise how much damage those immaculate images can quietly do.
The first time I saw an official leaflet about supporting people who balance ongoing treatment with their jobs, I felt an odd mixture of hope and irritation. Hope, because such support genuinely exists and matters enormously. Irritation, because the imagery always seemed so serene. Nobody in those photographs looked terrified on the morning of a scan, or rehearsed a shaky explanation for their manager in the toilet cubicle. The picture was perfect; my experience was not. Behind every glossy image of "coping well" there is usually someone negotiating reduced hours, swallowing fear before a meeting, or quietly Googling their rights at midnight.
