There are dominant starts, and then there are the kind of afternoons that make you stop scrolling and just watch. Reid Detmers delivered the latter on May 26, 2024, carving through the Cleveland Guardians lineup with the poise of a veteran ace and the repertoire of a true pitching savant. The young Los Angeles Angels left-hander has quietly become one of the most fascinating arms in baseball, blending a hapless-to-hit curveball with a growing arsenal that keeps hitters guessing until the moment the ball is already past them. Against Cleveland, every weapon was on display.

Reid Detmers Strikes Out Eight Against the Guardians

Reid Detmers strikes out eight batters against the Cleveland Guardians on May 26, 2024

Eight strikeouts in a single outing is impressive on any day, but the way Detmers accumulated them is what turned heads across the league. The Guardians are notoriously one of the toughest teams in baseball to punch out — they make contact, they put the ball in play, and they grind at-bats longer than almost anyone. Detmers didn't care. He attacked the zone early, buried breaking balls when he needed a whiff, and elevated his fastball at the top of the zone to finish at-bats. It was a clinic in sequencing, the kind of performance that shows why analytics-minded fans have been pounding the table on his underlying numbers for years. The stuff has always played; on this afternoon, the command caught up to it.
