If there is one thing that gets me out of bed on a crisp spring morning, it is knowing that baseball is back and the San Diego Padres schedule has finally dropped. I have been following this club for years, and let me tell you, planning my life around 162 games is no small feat. Whether it is pencilling in a weekend series at Petco Park or setting an alarm for a late-night away game, the schedule is basically my calendar's best mate. Over the past few seasons I have learnt a few tricks about making the most of it, and I thought I would share how I go about it, because honestly, half the joy of being a fan is in the anticipation.
The moment the schedule is released, usually well before the season kicks off, I sit down with a cuppa and go through every single series. I mark the divisional clashes against the Dodgers and the Giants first, because those are the games you simply cannot miss. There is something special about circling the rivalry matchups and knowing months in advance that I will be glued to the telly. I also keep an eye out for long homestands, as they are perfect for squeezing in a trip to Petco Park, especially when the weather in San Diego is absolutely glorious. Trust me, a little forward planning goes a long way when it comes to grabbing decent seats before they sell out.
What I love most about digging through the Padres schedule is spotting the hidden gems. Weekday arvo games are a blessing if you can swing the time off, and giveaway nights are always worth a look, even if you end up with more merch than you know what to do with. I have also learnt to watch out for those brutal road trips, the stretches where the boys are away for what feels like forever, because that is when the schedule really tests your devotion. Staying up past midnight for a game on the East Coast is a rite of passage for any true fan, and I would not have it any other way. By the time September rolls around and the playoff race heats up, every fixture feels like a grand final, and I would not trade that feeling for the world.
At the end of the day, the schedule
