The Lie On Netflix

I finally sat down last weekend to watch The Lie on Netflix, and I have to say, it left me with that uncomfortable, itchy feeling that only a good domestic thriller can deliver. Released in 2018 but picked up by Netflix as part of its Halloween collection, this film stars Mireille Enos, Peter Sarsgaard, and Joey King as a fractured family spiralling into darkness after a single terrible decision. If you have ever wondered how far a parent would go to protect their child, this film offers a deeply unsettling answer. Grab a cup of tea, settle into your favourite spot on the sofa, and let me tell you why this one stayed with me long after the credits rolled.

A Simple Deception That Snowballs Out of Control

The premise of The Lie is deceptively simple. Teenage Kayla confesses to her father that she pushed her best friend off a bridge into a freezing creek, and instead of doing the sensible thing and calling for help, he covers it up. What follows is a masterclass in watching bad decisions compound. As I watched, I kept shouting at the screen, telling the characters to just come clean, but the film cleverly shows how each small lie demands a bigger one. The tension never comes from jump scares or violence on screen; it comes from the slow, suffocating realisation that this family has crossed a line they can never uncross. It is the kind of storytelling that makes you squirm in the best possible way.

The Performances That Carry the Whole Film

What truly elevates The Lie beyond your average straight-to-streaming thriller is the acting. Mireille Enos is magnetic as the mother, Rebecca, whose fierce protectiveness curdles into something genuinely sinister. Peter Sarsgaard brings a quiet desperation to Sam, a father trying to hold his family together with strings of deception. And Joey King, fresh off her breakout role, plays troubled teen Kayla with just the right amount of ambiguity: you are never quite sure whether she is a victim, a manipulator, or both. The film was written and directed by Veena Sud, whose work on The Killing clearly informed her knack for slow-burn family dysfunction. My only real criticism is the ending, which some viewers find abrupt and frustrating. Personally, I appreciated the ambiguity, though I can understand why it divided audiences.

So, should you watch The Lie on Netflix? If you enjoy morality tales about ordinary people making monstrous choices, absolutely. It will not reinvent the thriller genre, and it will not leave you feeling cheerful, but it will spark a genuinely interesting debate with whoever watches it alongside you. Would you lie for your child? Could you live with the consequences? Those questions haunted me for days afterwards, and that, to me, is the mark of a film worth your evening.
