Tim Mayza Stats

Right then, gather round, baseball fans and lovers of moderately obscure relief pitchers, because today we're talking about Tim Mayza — the Toronto Blue Jays' left-handed reliever who has quietly been chucking baseballs past bewildered batters for years. If you've never heard of him, don't worry; that's exactly how he likes it. Mayza is the baseball equivalent of that reliable mate who always shows up to help you move house: not flashy, never bragging, but absolutely essential when things get messy. Let's dig into the numbers, shall we?

The Era of Ground Balls and Grumpy Lefties

Tim Mayza's stat line reads like a love letter to ground ball pitchers. The man induces grounders the way a bakery induces queues outside its door on a Saturday morning. Across his seasons with the Blue Jays, he's consistently posted a ground ball rate north of 50%, which in plain English means batters hit the ball into the dirt and then trudge sadly to first base while infielders do all the actual work. His career ERA has hovered in that lovely low-to-mid 3.00 range, occasionally dipping lower, occasionally wobbling higher — because he is human, despite what his 2022 season may have suggested. That year, he was so good that opposing lefties presumably considered taking up cricket instead.

Weathering the Storm: Tommy John and the Comeback

Now, here's where the stats get genuinely heroic. In 2020, Mayza underwent Tommy John surgery — the elbow procedure that has ended careers of lesser mortals. Did he sulk? Did he retire to a life of artisanal cheese? He did not. He came back in 2021 and threw over 60 innings, then followed it up with an absolutely filthy 2022 campaign featuring a sub-2.00 ERA at one point and more scoreless appearances than a dodgy weatherman has wrong forecasts. His strikeout-to-walk ratio has been tidy, his walk rate stingy, and his ability to pitch multiple times a week frankly concerning for anyone who values elbow ligaments. Tim Mayza: not a household name, but statistically, absolutely one of the good'uns.
