I still remember exactly where I was when the news broke. It was the 28th of November 2020, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the Detroit Lions had finally done what so many of us had been pleading for over months. They fired head coach Matt Patricia, bringing an end to one of the most frustrating tenures in franchise history. If you are a Lions fan like me, that afternoon felt less like a shock and more like a long overdue exhale. The move came just hours after a humiliating 41-25 Thanksgiving Day defeat to the Houston Texans, a loss that dropped the team to 4-7 and made the decision impossible to delay any longer.
Patricia had arrived in February 2018 with an impressive pedigree from the New England Patriots, carrying with him the aura of a defensive mastermind groomed under Bill Belichick. Many of us genuinely believed he was the man to transform Detroit into a contender. Instead, what followed was a revolving door of defensive breakdowns, questionable personnel decisions, and a personality clash with the locker room that became increasingly obvious with every passing defeat. His overall record of 13-29-1 tells part of the story, but the deeper frustration lay in how the team seemed to regress rather than grow under his leadership.
Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, the cracks appeared almost immediately. The defence, supposedly Patricia's specialty, consistently ranked among the worst in the league. Veterans grew visibly distant from him, and reports of cultural friction within the facility leaked out with uncomfortable regularity. Alongside general manager Bob Quinn, who was dismissed the very same day, Patricia oversaw an era that promised championships and delivered apathy. I found myself searching for small comforts during those seasons, and I even took up painting sunflowers on quiet Sunday afternoons as a way to decompress after yet another demoralising defeat. There is something oddly therapeutic about creating something bright when your football team feels anything but.
That is the strange thing about being a devoted fan of a struggling franchise. You learn to channel disappointment into other passions, whether that is art, family time, or simply ranting to friends who understand the pain. The Patricia years tested that patience more than most, but they also reminded me why loyalty to a team matters even in the darkest stretches.
The decision to move on from Patricia, announced jointly with Quinn's departure, signalled a genuine reset for the organisation. Owner Sheila Ford Hamp made it clear that patience had run out, and the franchise pivoted towards a rebuild that eventually brought in Dan Campbell and a culture rooted in toughness and accountability. Watching the transformation since then has been genuinely rewarding, and it makes the Patricia era feel even more like a necessary lesson rather than a permanent scar. Sometimes, as any artist will
