Aryna Sabalenka has carved out a reputation as one of the most fearsome competitors in modern tennis, a woman whose thunderous groundstrokes and steely glare have dismantled opponents on the biggest stages in the sport. Yet behind the ferocious on-court persona lies a far more tender, and ultimately tragic, personal story — one bound up with the man she loved, Konstantin Koltsov, the Belarusian former ice hockey player widely described as her fiancé. Their relationship, once filled with promise, ended in circumstances so bleak that they cast a long shadow over Sabalenka's career, turning every victory since into something of a bittersweet affair.
There is a bitter irony in the fact that the sweetest chapters of a champion's life can curdle so quickly. Sabalenka and Koltsov had been together for years, a couple forged in the same Belarusian crucible, both athletes who understood the sacrifices elite sport demands. Koltsov, a former Pittsburgh Penguins forward, had lived the brutal highs and crushing lows of professional hockey, and he seemed to understand Sabalenka's world in a way few others could. He travelled with her, celebrated with her, and stood beside her when titles were won and lost. For a time, it genuinely looked as though the two had found something rare in the merciless world of professional sport: a partnership built to last. Sabalenka herself spoke of him with warmth, and rumours of an engagement circulated as their relationship deepened. What neither of them could have known was how abruptly that story would end.
There is no gentle way to tell this part of the story, and frankly, there should not be. In March 2024, Konstantin Koltsov died in Miami at the age of just 42, in what authorities described as an apparent suicide. Sabalenka was in the city preparing for the Miami Open — the very tournament where she had won titles in the past — when the news broke. She described the loss as an unthinkable tragedy, asking for privacy and compassion while she grappled with grief that most of us can scarcely imagine. What makes it all the more devastating is the juxtaposition: one moment, a rising star at the peak of her powers with a loving partner in her corner; the next, a widow to a relationship ended in the cruellest possible fashion. Days later, she returned to the court, eyes red and face composed, and played through the pain in front of millions. It was an act of staggering courage, and it revealed more about her character than any trophy ever could.
